Tractor Man!

Cyrus was a client with Alzheimer's disease. Still, he took pride in what he did; one of the things he loved best was to trim his own lawn. He loved getting on his lawn tractor every day and giving his grassy friend a trim.

As his dementia increased, Cyrus's family felt his tractor unsafe for him. Ultimately this brought Cyrus to a cycle of depression, anger, and despair. Finally, the family called Silverado At Home. His caregiver took action. She and the Care Manager created a plan that would supervise him, creating a safe environment for him to mow his lawn.

"It was pure joy to watch Cyrus ride his tractor up and down the lawn. Every once in awhile he'd get stuck, and I'd run over, help him maneuver back into position, and away he'd go again!" said his caregiver, Dorothea. "I only hope to be as satisfied when I'm his age!"

Going Home

Silverado at Home - Home Care and Home Health Care Success Stories

Rosie had been canning fresh peaches all day, when she suddenly began to experience a tingling sensation in her fingers; she dismissed the tingling and thought nothing of it. Pretty soon she broke into a cold sweat as the tingling continued. Rosie figured she was just over exerting her self from all canning she had been doing. Before she knew it she began to loose sensation in her face, the left side of Rosie's body became limp and numb; her legs buckled under her weight as she fell to the floor. Rose had had a stroke.

After months of therapy, hospital stays, and skilled nursing facilities, she was ready to go home. She wanted to live life, more importantly she wanted to be with her family. Rosie missed her daughter, and grandchildren. One day Rosie was speaking with her Geriatric Care Manager, she looked up at him with tears in her eyes saying, "I can't quilt any more". Speaking in a soft tone, she looked down at her disabled left arm saying, "I want to go home. Can you find someone who will want to take care of me?"

Immediately, the Geriatric Care Manager arranged for a comprehensive assessment, and developed a care plan for her final homecoming. It was difficult to tell who was more excited, Rosie, her loving family or her small, perfectly groomed Schnauzer Sweetie-pie. Everyone had deeply missed her for the past year. With the help of Silverado, generations of family were finally able to gather around the dinner table laughing and making plans for the future. Silverado Senior Services care companions were able to help Rosie actively participate and enjoy family living once again.

Cueing for a Kiss

Millie and Walt are an amazing couple. Together for nearly 70 years, both the husband and wife have dementia. Prior to Silverado's involvement, Walt and Millie's family were becoming increasingly frustrated with their parents' behavior towards each other. The two became easily agitated and would have extended lengths of time not speaking to one another. The family hired Silverado At Home to help bring the joy back into Millie & Walt's lives.

Our wonderful caregiver, Miriam became the primary live-in caregiver for Walt and Millie. Not only does Miriam assist Millie and Walt with their needs in their daily lives, she ensures that both Millie and Walt engage each other each day by reminding them how important they are to each other. Every morning, Miriam reminds Walt to give his beautiful wife Millie a good morning kiss; Walt will reach out to Millie and embrace her with a long kiss, leaving Millie blushing and smiling uncontrollably at her husband of 70 years.

Giving Life

Althea is a 93-year old woman with dementia that had been receiving live-in care from Silverado At Home for a year and a half. Althea began to demonstrate end stage dementia symptoms. Her doctor suggested the family consider placing her in a nursing home.

The family was devastated. They did not want to traumatize Althea with the stress of moving her out of her home, nor away from her precious dog Muffin. With great sadness her family reached out to their Geriatric Care Manager, Darlene.

Darlene reassured and comforted the family and informed them that there were many resources available that would allow their beloved Althea to pass away in the comfort of her own home. With the family and doctor's permission, Darlene contacted Silverado Hospice.

One-on-One Turnaround

Mr. Lee is a client of Senior At Home.  When services began, he was not very sociable, had difficulty-trusting people, and was becoming increasingly agitated and angry with those around him.  In addition, Mr. Lee was unable to eat solid foods and was placed on a purée diet.

His wife and family felt it would be best for him to receive one-on-one homecare supervision on a daily basis. Before long, Mr. Lee began to develop a fondness for his caregivers. With their assistance, he began eating solid foods and taking walks around his home.

One day Mr. Lee said, “If it was not for them, these people are the ones keeping me alive.”  The family was very pleased to know that their decision to choose Silverado At  Home was having such a positive impact!
